The waste of a staggering 1.3 billion tons of food per year is not only causing major economic losses “one trillion dollars” but also a significant harm on the natural resources that humanity relies on for a sustainable environment. Fruits and vegetables, plus roots and tubers have the highest wastage rates of any food.
There are many reasons behind food waste and one of them is the shelf life, where they are affected by bacterial attack, oxidation (contact of O2) and respiration.
STARTCHY is a new coating material made of 100% natural products that extends the shelf life, decreases the transpiration so maintaining the water of fruits and vegetables, decreasing the weight loss during shipping, and later STARTCHY will be applied on other types of food.
The first bioproduct coating we have developed is STARTCHY for apples which is natural mix of NATURAL BIOPRODUCTS, based on starch mixed with water. As is standard in industry, the coating is applied by spraying the liquid on apples. The protective cover limits the apple’s interaction with oxygen and have an antibacterial effect which can inhibit bacteria proliferation that harms the fruit. The product has been shown in our labs to extend the shelf life of apples for up to 50 days. Compared to the industry target of 15 days, this is a break through.
STARTCHY aims to disrupt traditional chemical-based coating materials with our all natural, healthier coating. Unlike some upcoming competitors that require complicated preparation and coating processes, STARTCHY is a simple mixture of already-existing bioproducts that are applied using industry-standard coating equipment.
